farmall 400 starting

I have recently bought a Farmall 400d. I was wondering if anyone knew the correct procedure for starting the motor on gas and swapping to diesel fuel. Also, are you supposed to swap back to diesel before shutdown? Thanks in advance.

People are going to tell you to buy a manual. Shut down is very important. Be sure the motor is cooled off as much as you can get it by letting it idle before turning it off. Turning it off while hot can result in a cracked head. Some say you can turn it off without switching it back to gas, as it runs hotter on gas than diesel and you want it as cool as possible.
I have never run one. Just telling you some of what others have posted. Which is in the archives.

With Throttle completly closed and swithing lever on the gas side (mine lever would be in the forward position) start the engine as you would any other gas motor (mine usually needs a little choke)after start up in will be at a fast idle (remember there is no throttle for the gas side).I let mine run just until I see the temp. gauge start to move (about 2-3 minutes at cold startup). Pull back on the swithing lever while opening the throttle about half way and after some smoke and a couple of rattles it will be running on the diesel side. They are a neat piece of machinery and I never get tired of marveling at the engineering that must have went in to that engine.

By the way the linkages that make all this happen are very touchy in thier adjustment so if this is a new project it would be wise to get the manuals and spend an afternoon going over the linkages. It is slow and frustrating but believe me it will be time well spent.
