48 m tractor gear oil

I have owned my 48 M for about 4 years and I am thinking about draining the rear end and adding 80-90 weight gear oil. I have been hearing about seal leaks after changing the gear oil. Is it wise to change it or let be? I use it for moving bales and snow in the winter (SD) and I have not had any problems. Any advice would be helpful.

If you decide to drain it, I recommend you drain out 1 gal of oil, and add 1 gal of diesel fuel. Drive it around, no load in 4th gear for 0 minutes. Then drain all the old oil and fuel. That old oil is pretty nasty at the bottom of the case. This will loosen up the sludge.

to add to what gordo said, have at least 3- 5 gallon empty pails handy. there should be close to 15 gallons of it in the rear, and it can come out pretty quick. DONT drop the drain plug in the 5 gallon pail when draining, aint easy to find, and cleaning up 90 wt is a real mess (dont ask how i know) . also loosen the drain plug but dont take it all the way out at first, you may get a gallon or two of water out first. if nothing comes out, carefully remove the plug and reach in with a piece of wire to knock the hard goo out of the way, get ready with the bucket.

There are two drain plugs. One at the back and another at the front of the transmission. There's a divider in the middle of the trans case so you need to drain both halves separately.

Gordo, I third the diesel fuel, but you probably don't need to drain it. Most of them haven't been checked since the 60's and have leaked enough out for a gallon of diesel :D

From what I have heard, the leaks start to develop when changing gear oil bc you fill it back up to capacity. The leaking seals have allowed the oil to drain below the leaking levels, but when you fill it up they start again.
