Morning All,
I dont see much written about the IH 454,
We are going to look at one here soon.
What Ive read the are a pretty good loader tractor. We are looking at one with a loader,
is there anything we should be on the look out for??????
Dont know alot about it till I see it it is a gasser with a loader .
anyone have pros/cons on this tractor?
we want to move small round bales and firewood.
thanks
Harry

Hi don't know anything about the gas engine. My brother has two a 454 and 495 Diesel models with D-179 German Diesel engine.
Pros: Reliable, good hydraulics, very maneuverable 40 HP utility tractor.
Cons: hydraulic brakes and parking brake.
Check foot brakes for not being "spongy" and parking brake will hold on a slope.
Hopefully it has an 1850 loader not a 2250. The 2250 model is to heavy for 454. Also check front axle and steering parts, tie rod ends etc.
The straight front axle is better for loader than swept back axle. Will require fluid in rear tires or additional weight on rear for round bales over 1000 lbs.

Hope this helps

Hi.

Grew up on two diesel 454's... one with a loader, one without. Agree they made good loader tractors. Ours had the 1550 loader.

Cleaned many, many chicken houses with it.

Agree with the other comments about parking brakes... not likely to be working.

Regular brakes did seem to get spongy as tractor got older.

Can't comment on the gas version... diesel version was good on fuel.
