Key for 400 ignition switch

I hope to be able to attempt to start my parts tractor this next weekend. It is missing the key. It appears to be the original switch. I remember hearing someone say that you could use almost anything to get the old switches to turn. Is that true or do I need to find a key or replace the switch?
Thank you
Steve

They were all one key and they were nothing elaborate. Don't force it, but you can try fiddlin' with a screwdriver to see if it will turn.

oemtractorparts.com sell replacement keys for five bucks.

Just click the two wires together or cross them with a screwdriver. You don't need a key, especially on a parts tractor!

Just about any IH tractor from the hundred series up through the 56 series used the same key.
Even Cub Cadets used that key.

Ask a Cub Cadet dealer for a key to a 122, 123, 124, 125 etc. It will work and they are all the same.

some ended up with a delco switch at some point. that switch has a half round key. others ended up with various aftermarket key switches so be preparted for anything!

If it's like the original key switch on my 1966 140, the awl on the back of any (real Victorinox) Swiss Army Knife works just fine. It just won't stay in while you run it. This can be a safety hazard, but it's ok for a test start.

The NAPA replacement lock I have is far pickier. Mine went after 20 years of light use; I wonder how many true originals are out there.

This tractor is still the orginal 6 volt with positive ground. The dash panel screws are rusted solid. I really do not want to have to break in to it. I will try to rig a new key the best I can, or just use a jumper wire. I used one on my "C" for a year before I got off my lazy butt and replaced the bad wire.
