Sizing ripper to IH 3588

I recently bought a John Deere 9 shank heavy duty ripper. I use my IH 3588 for heavy field work but I suspect this might be too much even though my Snoopy has a very strong motor and clutch (new). I was thinking about removing several of the shanks to be able to go deeper into the hardpan. Our Georgia land is flat and mostly medium soil but there are several areas of compacted hard pan that I would like to bust up. Any suggestions on the number of shanks that would be appropriate for the 3588 so I don"t overstress the tractor in the difficult spots. I have heard from other farmers who stopped their tractors cold (150-180hp) when they unexpectedly ripped into the hard stuff.

I don't have any idea how your soils pull but here in WC-IN we pull a 5 shank CIH/DMI 2500 inline ripper with a MX 275 (275 engine hp) and I have hit spots where it will kill the tractor before you can downshift or push the clutch in. Usally run about 12-14" deep, no-till shanks with 7" winged points.

here in ky we have a brillion 7 shank v ripper we pull 12" deep with a 1486 IH and it is all it wants in 3rd low. we use straight points.

If you got it turned up to around 200hp, don't the 3588 have a 466 motor? It might pull a 5 shank. My brother in law pulls a 5 shank with a CIH 7130 and a CIH 8950 and the 7130 turned up to 200hp and the 8950 at 230 and thats a dead load at times and they both have front wheel assist. When I help him I pull it at around 5mph and times it will spinn all four wheels with duals on the back and all tires filled with fluid and full set of weights on the front going 16-18" deep

What do you mean by ripper? I know some people call a ripper what I know as a chisel plow. I know a 9 tooth chisel plow is too much for a 3588 plowing to full depth of 8 inches unless you have some really light soils. Used to do that in Wi, no duals and it would stop the 3588 dead.

A 9 shank ripper or subsoiler, again as we call them around here.... would be way too much plowing to full depth. I would think 3 shank may almost be too much for you depending upon the tooth design of this type plow. We have a blue jet ripper 5 shank that has angled teeth and its a load for an 8550 allis (350hp) in our illinois soils.

Here in Iowa, we have a 5 shank m&W earthmaster disk ripper with 5in tines. we run it 8-10 inches deep with my 3588. No fluid or weights, just duals. It is running about 180HP. Most of the time its handleing it great in 4 lo unless you hit the endrows where we've been runnin the semi a lot.

Thanks for all the replies. Confirms my thoughts as I've been told that it takes about 30-50 hp per shank depending on the soil. I think I will start with 4 shanks and try to pull it in 4th low and see how deep I can go without straining and then maybe go to 3rd low if it lugs it down. My 3588 does have the 466 engine but I don't know how much it has been turned up as I'm the third owner. It does not smoke pulling a heavy duty disk harrow or plow in 4th low so I think it is probably close to stock.
