47 H Vertical Distributor Mystery pump

I've noticed that many pictures I see of H's the distributor is horizontal (wires come out towards the driver). Mine has a vertical distributor (wires come striaght out the top.)

What's the difference between the two? Any benefits from one to the other? Which should be on my '47 H?

Also, I noticed a hydraulic pump of some sort right after the distributor, which two threaded ports sealed off with cast iron screw in male caps. Any idea as to what this is?

Thanks All!
Bill

the vertical distributor is prolly a delco remy, not uncommon when changing over from a magneto to a later style ignition.

The pump is an aftermarket live hyds pump installed one on a H I had many years ago worked great wish I stll had the pump sold it after I sold the tractor.

horizontal distributor is most likely an IH distributor, vertical would likely be a Delco Remey. IH offered a third distributor but I can't think of the name offhand....danged CRS, but I believe it began with a P. Old IH partsman once told me the 3rd distributor option was not very common & they he had seen less than a handful of IH tractors with them. Guy had been an IH parts man from the early '50s until he retired in the '90s.

Guy could recite parts #s off the top of his head for almost every piece of IH equipment made. Use to make young partsmen mad, ask for a part & he would walk back & get it out of a bin faster than they could look up the number

Prestolite is the third one. I don't know that I have ever seen one on a Farmall, but I do know they were used. Finding tune-up parts for a Prestolite is probably next to impossible.

(quoted from post at 10:03:27 09/01/09) Thanks Rusty, that was the name I was thinking of. Heck to get old & have CRS..........LOL

Who's old? I know that Prestolite was used as standard equipment on some brand of tractor, but darned if I can remember which one.

I have an IHC vertical distributor on an 1949 M that was a replacemnt for magneto. It has the IH part number cast in the housing. It's the same parts number as the no. in the parts book for the horizintal disreibutor. The replacement parts(points, condenser, rotor & cap)are the same as the horizontal IH ones and are available from Case/IH, NAPA and other parts houses. The visual differnce is the vertical distance between the base of the distributor down to where it bolts to upright base is approx. 1 1/4 in. as compared to the Delco-Reme which is about 2 in. plus. The Delco also has it's part no. cast in it's base and also has a Delco- Reme itentificaion plate attached. Another diference is the Delco distributor cap has a lip that extends over the base and the IH does not.
