I just bought a 1947 Farmall M.After i restore it i want to know what distance to set the rear wheels at. 6 foot center to center? I also found 2 flat washers and 2 chunks of metal in the bell housing.I stuck my finger in the bell housing hole thats how they were found. A guy told me that the starter nose probably broke off years ago and they never got all the pieces out.was this a common problem with farmalls?I did get the washers out thru the starterhole. I am still working on the metal chunks.

Those 2 washers and chunks of metal could possibly be left over from a previous repair, but you'll never know until you dig deeper, and if it were mine, I would want to exactly where they came from. Stray parts floating around inside the clutch housing may be harmless enough, but could also indicate something that needs to be fixed.

Rear wheel width is determined by what the tractor will be used for. The absolute widest setting will result in a very stable and safe ride but can become quite awkward also.

If you will be hauling the tractor on a trailer, you want those rear wheels slid all the way in.

As Rusty indicates, Finding their source is a good idea.
Lowering the belly pump will open up the view of the clutch and related components (taks 2 hours and some ready rod to lower it to the floor (or a floor jack and help) See archives for belly pump removal. Wheelbase is adjustable to allow it to be what you like. I like the wheels dished out and about 4 inches of axle showing between the housing and clamp. But you can just have at it. JimN
