What is the purpose of the tube that goes from the rear of the head to the air cleaner?

It is designed to draw combustion vapors out of the crankcase. Air enters the vent tube on the right side by the oil pan unless there is more blowby than can be extracted through the air cleaner. Then it also flows out the lower vent tube.
