My recently acquired 400 suffers from a wobbly steering wheel. It has the factory power steering
disc in front of the wheel. OEM lists wheels for many models, with a note, Not for 400 with power steering.
Is this steering wheel unique. I don't want to pull the old one until I have the new one in hand.
If it is unique, who has them?

Is your steering wheel fully covered or bare spokes? If bare spokes a M steering wheel will work, if covered and an early ser # you can find one on a 303 combine with early ser #, they are keyed and not splined like the latter tractors and combines, I have a good used covered keyed on if you need it, Mike

IH sold the same steering wheel for power steering or not on 400 tractors. The retaining nut for ones with the metal power steering disc emblem was different. I purchased a steering wheel from OEM at a show a few years ago when they had a special on them. Used it a little and the spokes come lose were they go in the hub.

The wheel has bare spokes. I'm just thinking it was replaced and is in fact the wrong one. I'll just see if it comes off and look at the shaft, mic it and go from there. Thanks for the offer.

OEM has a misprint there. That steering wheel doesn't fit a 350 with or without power steering and if it replaces 60070 D IH part # it should fit a farmall 300 or 400 with both types of steering.
If you look at the item it has IH # 60070 D. Thats the same number used on lots of M and on SM and 400 tractors. Don't take my word for it, look up the part numbers. The correct wheel for a farmall 400 has bare spokes and a keyway. I have had 400 tractors as high as just under serial # 41000 and the only difference between power steering and manual is if equiped with the little metal disc that says power steering under the nut holding wheel on is the nut is made different to keep from mashing the metal plate.
IH also sold the bigger diameter steering wheel than 60070 D for 400 tractors to give a little help on steering if you wanted to add it on.

Some clown had put too small a key in the keyway, then tried to get the "slop" out of it by welding the wheel to the shaft. Of course the weld broke, and I spent quite a while carefully getting that slag off there with an air die grinder.
It's off and it is a 3/4 keyed shaft like all of them. I see 4 spoke 20 inch wheels offered for it. Is that the correct wheel?

Our 400 has a 20" four spoke steering wheel on it and I"m sure that is what it was built with. My dad and grandfather bought it used in 1965 from the IH dealer that sold it new, and I"m sure the steering wheel was never replaced when the original owner had it, and we have never replaced it. However, I just looked in the IH parts catalog and it says the 20" steering wheel was special equipment. Our 400 has a wide front and does not have power steering, and I can tell you that it steers hard enough with the 20" wheel. It would be worse with the 18". I"m sure the 18" wheel would be OK with power steering though. Click on the link below for the 18" steering wheel.
