Hi i have just bought a I4 with a winch on the back. Now i was told this tractor was order new in 1951 by erie flooring company of west lorne ontario to move box/rail cars around. I have never seen one with a winch and am wondering what info anyone can tell me about the I4's or how rare is this? Thank you Keith

Field Marshall Tractors of England built in the '40s and '50s could be ordered with a factory produced rear mounted winch. I have never seen a similar OEM winch on a IH wheeled tractor. Moreover, they are not listed in the parts books in the "Attachments" section. Many IH crawlers had winches but I believe they were supplied by other mfgs. A crawler winch cannot be fitted to a wheeled tractor without serious re-work.

This slightly off topic but I can only think of one vehicle mfg that made their own winches. That would be Mack Trucks.

The I4 is the industrial equivalent of the Farmall H. It shares the same engine and many transmission parts with the H (row crop), the W4 (Wheatland standard tread version), and if there was an O4 (orchard version), that too...

The winch is definitely an add-on. Can you find any lettering in the winch castings that would identify where it came from? Companies were very proud of their products in the 1950's and would make sure that their company name and city of origin were cast prominently into anything they made.

It was very common for specialty companies to buy a bunch of IH tractors and outfit them with equipment for a certain job. That could be the case here, or the Erie Flooring Co. could have purchased the tractor and winch separately, and had their mechanic install it.

I posted 2 pics under tractor photos of this tractor on of the front and one of the winch

Very interesting but definitely field or shop made installation. I have never seen rear winch on a I-4, but, I have seen several different pictures of I-9's with a railroad coupler for moving railroad cars.

Thanks for the pictures. It almost seems like the winch is too large for the application. I wonder what that silver colored item is below the carb.

Many years ago I saw a I-4 equipped with a front winch and boom. I don't remember how the winch was driven. Our dealership had a I-4 that was used for a shop mule but it did not have a winch. The dealership also had a Farmall B shop mule that did have a front winch and boom.

In the vintage photos of the gallery section there is a picture of the Farmall B shop mule with the front boom. Just search "Farmall B Shop Mule" if interested and the photo will come up. I used to have a lot more vintage pictures but lost them all when my computer crashed some time back.

The winch is driven by the pto. There is a gear box ahead of the seat and a chain from the pto to the gear box then another chain from the gear box to the winch. It does have the heavy duty front axle. I have been a massey and john deere man until this tractor i bought it at an auction sale for 1000 dollars canadian and thought it was cheap and interesting. Never seen an I4 before this one.
