Need info for Int. 784

I'm thinking of buying a 784. I have found one in the $3500.00 range. The tractor has been well used, slightly abused and needs some money spent on it. The tach doesn't work so no idea of the hours. I would guess around 8-10 thousand. I plan to use it for bush hogging and rough work so I'm not intrested in cosmetics. The engine runs out good with no smoke, leaks, etc although it did seem a bit sluggish. It has problems with the brakes and parking brakes that seem to be common with this series and I'm figuring on replacing the clutch. I noticed something odd with the clutch. It seemed to be slow on take off when starting in the higher gears and gain speed after traveling a few feet. It didn't feel like a typical clutch slip. It felt to me more like a T/A tractor taking off in low range and switching into high. The guy told me he'd been pulling a disk with it and hadn't had any clutch slipping problems. I looked but didn't see any T/A linkage or any sign that it had a disabled T/A. Has anyone experienced anything like this? Also,is it possible to install a T/A in a non T/A tractor while replacing the clutch?
Any info and feedback will be greatlt appreciated
Thanks,
David

I have driven one of those -- the one you are looking at has a clutch problem. Clutch was very sensitive on the one I drove, opposite of what you noticed. Far as I know a TA was not available. That is a British tractor. Possibly assembled in US, I don't know. It has a high-low 4 speed, meaning 8 speeds. The one I drove was purchased new. It was a true lemon. I have heard no one else criticize the 784, but this one was not good.

Hi 784, should have a hydraulic T/A operated by a lever(looks sames as throttle lever) on the left side of steering column. Forward is direct drive (Hi) and back towards seat is Lo drive. The only adjustment on the T/A is the hydraulic pressure on the HI side clutch pack. My brother has a 684, same as 784 (but 784 has larger engine), it would do as you described when you let the clutch out it would not start moving or move slowly and then go normally. To make a long story short, we changed the clutch but did not fix the problem, then when you turned off the engine with tractor on a slope and transmission in gear the tractor would roll down the slope without turning the engine over. He had T/A replaced with T/A eliminator kit and problem was fixed. Examining the removed parts from T/A it would appear that the hydraulic pump that powers the clutch pack for the T/A was clogged up with junk from the chewed up parking brake band.
Engine is a German Diesel and will last a long time(15,000 or more hrs) with regular maintenance. It should not be sluggish, check for clogged air and fuel filters or junk in bottom of fuel tank restricting fuel flow.
