47 Farmall H correct gear oil

Hello again,

I read in my owner's manual that the rear on the 47 Farmall H takes 90W gear oil. All I could find at Tractor Supply was 90W MINERAL gear oil for use in Ford 8Ns. Will that work in the H, too?

As always, thanks for the help. This is my first Farmall and I'm just getting up to speed.

Don't be surprised it if starts leaking right after you drain and fill.

The seals on the hydraulic pump drive shaft and the main drive shaft are very likely to leak if they have been in there for a while. You also probably have only about 2.5-3 gallons, of 6, in there if the seals are shot.

Good luck!

unless you are in a very cold climate and you will use your h a lot when it is cold use 140 weight. it won't leak out near as easy. everything in your h transmission has sixty years of wear. the heavier oil won't hurt a thing. most of them have oil that is as thick as tar in them.

You"re right, the hydraulic pump does have some leaking going on. The pump isn"t hooked up properly, but that"s an issue for another post!
