My faithful old H is stuck in gear. For a while it was stuck in low gear but now I can't get it out of high--in the neutral position. Getting it out of the hay field in high was a real challenge! Looks like a major fixit job. Can anyone give me a clue as to what's in store for me?

Most likely your shifter lever is worn, not that hard of a fix.
There is a pin that holds the lever to the casting that needs to be removed. Some will have metal caps to keep the pin in place, some can be pried off, otherwise just drive a punch into one side and the other side will pop off.

Your shifter should look like the pic below, if not, it will need to be built up.

Thanks Randy--expecially for the diagram/photo! You just might have saved me a bunch of trouble! I was just getting ready to remove the trans. top. Not sure yet how I will get the gears back where they belong but will face that issue later.

Use a large flat screwdriver to reach down into the shifter hole and align the three shift rails.

I'll ad that pushing the clutch in, or rolling the tractor back and forth will help shift the rails into neutral easily. Replace the pin in the shifter if it shows wear. a grade 8 bolt cut to length is good. JimN

OK, I just got the rivet out of the collar that holds the spring down (had to drill out the rivet but I hit it dead center!). Now I see two things on the side of the shift tower that look like small (about 1/2" dia.) soft plugs. ...or are they just of the ends of the shifter pivot pin? Does the pivot pin just drive out? Thanks again you all!

Hey Randy--I see you already answered the latest question I asked. Duh!! Don't know what I'd do without this forum and all the great help thereon! THANKS AGAIN EVERYONE!

Randy, I got the 3 shift rails lined up OK but I see something that doesn't look right. Do you have the specs on the large and small swivel shaft pin diameters? I've a hunch someone long ago rebuilt these pins--not to spec, or IH was sloppy. The large 3/4" pin has a 1/2" dia.(plus or minus 1/16") hole through it for the small pin which is WAY off center. Also, the small pin is WAY smaller (3/8" dia.) than the hole in the large pin. Seems awfully sloppy--unless it is designed that way. The shifter lever is close to the specs in your photo. The .75" width is worn just slightly narrower. Sorry for the length of this message but had to get it right! Thanks again. Emails welcome too.

I see Pilot Knob Restorations will rebuild your shaft for you for $50ish including a new pivot pin, caps, and bushing thing. Is this worth it, or is it that easy to do yourself. I believe they charge about $25 for just the hardware.

Thanks but I got it fixed this evening. Wasn't very hard to fix with a little "rebuildig" once I learned whar was needed. I want to thank all the kind help offered by all you guys!
