More on the farmall B carb quandary

So, I've gotten the carb of the tractor and I have very little new information, though I have some better pictures, which you can see below and which relate to my questions and answers to your questions:

The round tag on my carb is blank!

The only other thing I can find, besides "ZENITH" stamed on both sides is a small "2" stamped on the side which you can see in the picture below (circled in case it wasn't obvious.)

Also, the small crack below the "jet passage plug" is visible in the first few threads inside if I unscrew the plug, though not apparently into the operational part of the carb. Do you think that's a big enough problem that I need a new carb rather than trying to refurb this one? The area above and to the right of the crack has obviously been brazed/welded before as well. Part of me thinks get a new one and part of me thinks that much of the fun of having an old tractor is making it run with as many of the old parts as possible!

Thanks in advance for any ideas!

This may sound crazy, right off the wall, but if there's a tag on the carb, try to make a pencil rubbing off of it.

If the crack is into the "jet passage" it will leak gas as that passage connects the main jet and the floatbowl.

It looks like the carb MAY have been repaired by welding a pipe fitting to the bowl, as I think it originally would have had a straight-threaded plug sealed by a gasket.

Why not put an ad on the CLASSIFIEDS to see if someone has an extra bottom half lying around at a reasonable price? I may even have one, I'll take a look. Email me, if interested, and I'll take a look.

CNH parts on-line shows the Zenith carb used on the "B" as a Zenith model # 161 X 7. I can't say that's what your tag should be stamped, though.

It shows the float bowl as the following Zenith #'s:

CNH # 53772D FUEL BOWL (Gasoline)(Zenith no. B3-63A) Serial # 501-to 61610

CNH # 53773D FUEL BOWL (Kerosene or distillate)(Zenith no. B3-63B) Serial # 501 to 67631

CNH # 62168D FUEL BOWL (Zenith no. B3-85D-2) Serial # 61611 and up

tried the rubbing, Scotty, but got nothing. The tag is clean and I can get a very good look at it...and I'm 99.9% sure it's blank.

I could remove it pretty easily but I doubt I could get it back on...

I'm trying to decide whether to get the lower half of an old one makes sense versus just getting a new one. I guess it's all about the price!

The other question is whether there's more than one kind out there. Some people have said there are several although in my own homework, I'm having trouble finding more than one type for a '41 B.

Please let me know if you have that lower half you mentioned. That could be a good solution!

You are right. There are no numbers on that tag, and without those numbers, you DO NOT know what model you have, and since you do not know what model it is, you will have a very difficult time to find a bottom half that will match up with the top half because the various parts from different models of Zenith carbs WILL NOT interchange. Send me an email and I will quote you a price on a replacement Zenith.

I have two A"s, one 1940, the other 1946. Both have Zenith #9752 carb"s. It is written on the round tag you show, towards the inside of the tag. There are other numbers outboard of the 9752. Allis Chalmers also used a zenith that looks identical on their CA"s *maybe B"s and C"a also) except the attachment bolt holes are about 1/8" different.
