Oil dripping from hole in bottom of clutch casing

re: 1961 IH Cub Lo-Boy.
I have oil leaking from a hole about the size of my pinky-finger in the bottom of the clutch case (about 4 inches in front of the clutch housing handhole cover. 1.) is this hole supposed to be there? 2.) Is there a plug that has fallen out? 3.) What could be causing this leak?

Please help. Thanks.

Jim: Just to add to what Scotty has said, no the hole does not have a plug. That drain is supposed to drain off any oil that leaked from engine. If it didn't the bottom of your clutch chamber would fill with oil in time.

doesn't sound good. I suppose this will require an engine tear-down to repair. Can I just leave it? I use the tractor to move my 6 acreas about every three weeks.

This oil may be coming from the front transmission seal. I think that is more likely than the engine. Does the oil look like transmission oil (thick) or engine oil (thinner). On the cub there is not a drain hole in the torque tube near the transmission so if the front seal on the transmission is leaking, the oil will eventually fill up the cavity in the torgue tube(Clutch housing) just in front of the transmission and then come out the hole near the clutch. You can test out if this is the case by parking the tractor with the front down hill. If more oil runs out, it is coming from the transmission. That transmission seal is not hard to replace, but you do have to split the tractor in just in front of the transmission. While you are in there, probably need to replace the front bearing on the transmission input shaft as well. Better get yourself a manual before you tear into this.

What color is it? If it's black, good bet it's the rear main on the engine. If it looks cleaner and a little thicker, frt seal on trans.
If it was me: (disclaimer)
Rear main, I would change the oil and add a bottle of stop leak with the fresh oil (don't overfill). Make sure that the PVC system is not clogged.

Trans seal, make sure you're not over full and that vents are free and live with it until it gets out of hand.

I go along with that. Keep a good eye on levels and live with it. BUT it aint gonna go on forever. The minute it shows any sign of getting bad its Fixit time MTF

Clean it up as best you can, run it and see how quickly it reappears, and monitor the oil consumption on your motor closely. If you're losing a half-quart on your three hour run for an example, you can get away with it as long as long as you monitor closely and keep your oil topped off, but at that rate you really need to look hard at getting it fixed, as it will only get worse, not better.

If you're only losing a quart over the whole summer's mowing you could let it go for a while if you liked, and put any repairs off to the off season. But keep a close eye on it.
