1939 Farmall M

Hi, how valuable or collectable is a 39 Farmall M. It has the orignal seat although rusted in the frame work pretty goo. Hasn't run in 5 years. nose is good, hood a little banged up, good rims bad tires, has hyd pump that he never used in the 20 plus years he's had it. no hyd hose, ports plugged. which ones would I tap into? I want to pull 3-14 jd555 plows. Are these M's hard on fuel? Thanks Pat

First year of production. Not too special. As described about 800$ if the engine is free. about 600 if stuck. It will pull the plow well in modest soil. it will not pull it in heavy soil/clay. Either left or right port on the tractor (front ports not the rear left delay port. Both go to a T inside, so there is only one control action. JimN

According to the Nebraska Tractor tests, they are not as hard on fuel as a comperable JD of the same era. That said, I personally, don't add a lot of value for a farmall M being a 1939 (first year) model. Actually, to me, they are a little less desireable than later M's due to the unique features they have. So, treating it like any other M in the condition you described, I'd say $650 - $950. I've fooled around with enough of these old tractors in the condition you've described to know one like that will suck up a pile of cash in no time.
Your cheapest M will be the [i:08282152e1]VERY[/i:08282152e1] best one you can find at a price you can barely, [u:08282152e1]possibly[/u:08282152e1] afford to pay. Actually, the same holds true for any old tractor, regardless of brand.

Very valuable at one time --almost that is. In the late 70's there was talk about in order to be a antique tractor in the tractor pulls they had to be 39 or older. The green boys did not want M IH's in the competition. Buy that must not have ever come to pass.

If I remember correct there was only 500 made in 39, but I can't remember what I had for breakfast either.

At one time some folks speculated on the 39 M's to bring them high profits when resold.
