340 water pump

I was trying to figure why the temp guage wasn't reading. Left the radiator cap off and ran the engine. Water got hot enough to steam, but the water did not appear to be moving at the top of the radiator. Should it be if the water pump is good? The pump shows no signs of leakage. The forum is great! Learn new things every week. Thanx.

If the thermostat is known to be good, could be the impeller has come loose from the pump shaft & isn't turning. Possible that a piece of radiator hose has come loose & is blocking coolant flow.
Have you checked the water temp with a thermometer? What is the reading? How full is the radiator? If it is clear full, you might not see any turbulance from the pump.

Thank you. I'll try the temp test this weekend. The liquid level is about 1-2 inches below the bottom of the filler neck. I'll draw it down to about an inch above the inside and see if there's any fluid movement. (Try the simple things first). Thanx again.
