Cub steering gear slop

I have a 48 cub and the steering gear box seems to have a bit more play than I would like to have. I have read that one may open up the box, take out the gear that meshes with the worm and turn it half a turn to get on some new metal. (I think the bore of the gear is splined). I realize that that would not bring it back to a factory feel, but that should help a great deal. The question is it worth all the work that will come with the task. Have any of you all done that?

It will help, but I don't think I would dive into it unless you are replacing the bushings as well. Alot of play can be taken out by tightening the nut on the arm and adjusting the steering rods. I guess it all depends on how much play we are talking about on the wheel, 1/8 turn, 1/4 turn 1/2 turn? Where in the linkages the is the play? Does the arm move up and down while turning the wheel? Do the wheels wobble back and forth while moving? Any play in the linkages? Does the arm move in conjunction with the wheel, or is there hesitation?

The steering arm will not move for about 5-7% when turning the wheel. I will say that after the arm the linkage seems to be pretty tight. I also feel like the worm is tight on the steering wheel shaft, so it about has to be play in the worm and worm gear since the arm is attached to the worm gear??? This is my best guess. thanks

I rebuilt my box and now it is perfect . There are several bronze oil lite bearings in there that get worn "2" of them are thrust wall they control how tight the steaing is.

That big castle nut you see when you look up into the box controlls the presure on the thrust wall bearings. You can try tighting that nut up alittle and see if that does it .

Chances are it needs new bearings ! The one Large bearing is a bit costly, i think i paid $60.00 for it alone. I rebuilt the hole thing all new bearing and seals and it is perfect and it is filled with oil and doesn't leak.

If you decide to replace the bearing go over to the farmallcub.com web site there is a cub parts only company there that i can't remember the name of.

Good luck , it is worth doing .
