Can you install PTO w/o felt washer?

I can't find mine. I see the parts diagram calls for a felt and felt retaining washer. I have no idea where they went and I am pretty sure I never took them out.
Can I reinstall it w/o them? With todays new seals I don't think you need the felt to keep the dust out. The bearing could wander in and out on the PTO shaft w/o the washer. Will this be a problem?

Whether or not you need it depends on how much dust there is. I would use it. CaseIH and others will have it. The bearing should be a press fit on either the shaft or the housing, depending on what tractor you have. I think you are talking about a spacer?

Sorry, I have an H with the flat PTO. I am missing 28 and 36 on the parts diagram. They still sell the felt, but the washer is retired. It seems like it might be a spacer just as much as a dust shield.
I don't plan on using the PTO much, but I hate to half azz it...

36 is the retainer for the felt. I really don't know if it's absence will cause any slop. I have not had my PTO apart. Perhaps salvage will have one. You might call Mike at Steel Wheel Ranch -- 785-548-7437. I am sure he has seen many of those PTO's. I have no idea whether he parts them out or sells intact, though.
