140 governor issues

I just reassembled my 140 after a 7 month rebuild. It runs pretty good with a couple small issues I could use some help with.
First the governor likes to surge back and forth. You can play with the throttle and smooth it out, but it is very annoying.
Second I'm not getting any charge. Do you have to polarize a 12 volt alternator like you do a generator? The coil gets really warm also. Thanks in advance.

I fixed the governor on one of my 140's but I can't remember what I did (sorry, long ago).

You don't need to polarize the alternator. If it's a one wire set up you have to rev the engine higher to get it to charge. Also check out the amp meter and output voltage (about 14.5 volts is normal). May need a new alt.

The coil gets warm but not too hot to touch. If it's bad it will get really hot and eventually shut down the engine within an hour (after spitting and sputtering).

I had trouble recently with a sputtering 140 engine and found sparks were jumping all over from the SP wires (when viewed at night). Replaced the wires and all was well. Just a thought.

On the governer make sure carb to governer rod adjustment is correct. carb WOT and governer rod all the way back. I like to push governer arm forward to take out any slack. Just enough to remove the slack.

Under the governer housing is a nut remove it and the bumper adjustment screw is right there. Loosen the jam nut. Back it out all the way count the turns. Check bumper spring. Is it OK, broken?

If spring is ok turn back in same number of turns then add 1/8 to 1/4 turn in and try it then, if still doing it turn in some more till it stops. If you go too far it will affect the low speed idle.

If you cannot adjust it out of the governer them you will need to overhaul the governer.
