I threshed all day yesterday and started my farmall M tractor several times. At the end of the day, I went to start it to put it away and all I get is a eletric buzzing coming from aroound the starter button. Can I just bypass the switch to get it running back to the shop? Is there anything else that it coould commonly be? Is there another way to start it?

starter switch is prolly wore out. you can bypass the switch by using a set of jumper cables. gonna depend on whether you are 6v pos ground or 12v neg ground. if 6vpos ground, hook one end of the jumper cable to neg post on the battery and touch the other end to the post on the starter. that should get er to turn over. you'll need a heavy set of jumper cables. if 12v neg ground, hook jumper cable to pos terminal of battery, then touch other end to starter post.

If the studs on the back of the switch are open to shorting across, the jumper clamp is often easy to use as a bypass between the terminals. Also, if jumping as Glennster indicates, using both jumpers to jumper the battery to the starter will carry twice the current as one. JimN

If you decide to use Janichlson's and glenster's method be carefull and triple check to be sure tractor is out of gear. I know of several in graveyard that were put there by starting tractor from ground and being run over or pushed through wall. Have had a couple of close calls myself.

Might be a no-brainer question, but, do you have a crank for it, and are the parts leading into the crank pully functional. And again - MAKE SURE it's in neutral before cranking.

Starter switch costs about $3, maybe replace it and check the connections first. If that doesn't work try pull starting it, a pickup should have enough to get it moving.

Well it turns out the battery was dead. I jump started with the pickup and it started right up. As it is 12 volt, I"ll check battery (old) and alternator.

Thanks for the help
