IH 684 Steering/Hydraulic Problems

I have been having problems with the power steering on my IH 684. I have had it in the shop and have replaced the MCV valve & pump with another "used" one since the cost of a new one was outrageous. When I got it back it steered fine for the first couple of hours and then started to become difficult to steer again. I need someone to offer some suggestions because after spending $1800 on it, I don't want to continue to spend more until I can better determine what else might be the problem.

I had problems with mine and it ended up being parking brake material clogging up the system.

Hi Rick, my thoughts are same as TWL. Does your parking brake hold on a hill? Since you already had MCV & pupm replaced, I would assume shop changed hydraulic filter and hydraulic oil. I would check the filter again for being clogged by greyish looking junk.
The hydraulic pump should put out 12 GPM at 2100 RPM and MCV should split 3 GPM of for PS and PB and other 9 GPM for 3PT and remotes.

Good luck

I would agree with other posters and add that there is another screen on the transfer lube pump and it will clog with the same parking brake junk and if it does the front section of transmission housing will be short of fluid after a few minutes of run time.

Thanks for the input. Can you explain more where the screen is on the transfer lube pump and exactly what the transfer lube punp is doing? My parking brake doesn't work well anymore and this may in fact be where some of this is coming from. How big of a job is it to rebuild the parking brake? I have changed the filter 2-3 times already and it does seem to make a slight difference but doesn't last long. If this is something that you might be able to talk to me about rather than through trying to explain it by e-mail then you can call me on cell# 270-779-6230.

Thanks,
Rick

Jim thanks for the input. You can check my other replies and suggestions on this but if the parking brake band is worn or has fractured away, should all of this material go back to the filter or would it go to somewhere else? Both times that I have had the MCV off and/or replaced by the shop, when they sent it back to me the steering was perfect for a couple of hours but went south quickly and never returned.
