How can I find out if it is a M or MD? Plate on housing is MD FDBK 149970 but I don"t see any indication of being diesel. Also I need to find the right manuals for it to check/change oil,tune-up, etc. I checked the research link but couldn"t find out for sure.

Aside from the engine and a few minor sheetmetal details there's no difference between an M and an MD.

My suspicion is that sometime in its 60 year existence your tractor's original diesel went bad and M gas motor was swapped in. You might check the serial number or casting date codes on the block to determine the year of the engine you now have. Then get an owner's manual for that year's gas M and you should be good.

One sign would be the housing that serial plate is on. If the starter mounts with 3 bolts instead of 2, it at least the housing came from a diesel or is a replacement or from a latter tractor. If it has 3 bolts and you can manage to see a 4 digit # on top of housing followed by 2 letters its a diesel housing. If the fuel tank has 2 openings in the bottom with one pluged that may be another sign. No trouble to tell whats in there now. If the exhaust comes through hood on right side of tractor or the side brake pedals are on, its a diesel. If exhaust comes up on left side its a gas. Thats comparing M and MD engines. Your tractor serial # is a 47 model to me, a 48 model on some lists.
If you have a gas M engine see if you can find a engine serial # stamped in block in a small flat area above ignition unit and below the front spark plug. If you post it with prefix letters if any that may tell what model the engine is.

One of the quickest ways to determine (from a distance) is to look at the exhaust location - viewing from the seat, the MD"s will be on the right side of the hood, and the straight M"s will be on the left side.

Thanks Bob; I think your suspicion was right. The engine is gas and made on 1-30-1950. I'll probably be back for more help, also like to thank the rest of the replies, I will keep this site in my favorites.
