Farmall M thru 400 Front Cover

I want to put a Farmall 400 Live Hydraulic Pump on a Super M but I am uncertain when they changed the front cover. I know the M front covers and the 400/450 front covers are different. Did they change them when the 264 engine came out in the Super M or did they wait unti the 264 was in a 400?

In 1950 at serial number 228082 the M front cover was changed to the same front cover as the SM, 400 & 450.

Jim I hope you don't think I'm nit picking on you. Just want to clear up your answer because I used to make the same mistake. If you look it up IH used FBKM serial # 228082 and up for a change in the cover. FBKM was the letters for engine prefix and means the change was made at engine serial # 228082. If FBK was before serial # it would mean the chassis serial #. Tractor serial # at change was probably 238082. Even though the bolt pattern for the distributor drive housing or where hydraulic pump mounts was changed to the same dimensions as SM through 450 there was around 5 different covers not counting service meter type ones. On the first type if you remove distributor drive and look inside cover you will see a plate or screen with 2 bolts holding it on. On some of those when a SM through 450 type pump is installed with the end of pump shaft made to install a service meter drive gear on it if needed, the end of shaft will contact inside cover before mounting surface of pump makes contact by just a little. Of coarse when no service meter is used its no problem to remove end of shaft and install pump.

I learned something today about the serial numbers in the parts books. My 1950 M has the SM front cover. I always have looked at the casting number to see if it had 6 numbers ending a R and a number.
