late 51 or 52 m hour metter

About 4 or 5 yr. ago an old framer friend of mine ask me to mow about 3ac. patch of blackberries, maybe 8-10' tall. Said i could have what's in there for doing that for him. there was 41 h and a late 51 or 52 m (depending on witch list? fbk285963x1 meter 6,114 hr). I was reading the letter series tractor book and came across part that said that the first gas engine to have a hour meter was the super m.this one has a meter 6114 hr. not to important, just wandering thanks danzil.

If its the gear driven one that mounts to timing gear cover, they were considered a attachment that could be added to tractor. They started in 1949 or 50. Think it was near the middle of 49 but can't be sure. MD had them before.

i have a late 52 m that has the hour meter, and also a stage 1 super m with the hour meter. pretty sure the m's with the hour meter off the distributor drives had the later timing cover and heavier gearset to drive the live hydraulic pump.

I have a 46 MD that also has the hour meter. Belive it came that way from the factory as the attaching bolts still have the wire locks. It shows 7,200 hours.

We should really get the terminology correct here to avoid confusion.

The device that is bolted to the right side of the front engine cover is called a service meter. I have a WW2 TD-14 that has one. I also have a propane W400 that is also fitted with the service meter and a tachometer. The gas and diesel meters are not interchangeable. They turn in opposite directions.

Hour meters were electrically driven and mounted on the light bracket on the steering post. They were suspended on a rubber diaphram to lessen vibration damage. They had a clock face and needle. The hour meter kit came with an oil pressure activated electrical switch that closed when the engine was running.

Not sure what the odometer in a tachometer is called. Probably hour meter. I assume that tachs made the electrical hour meter obsolete.

They made a hour meter front cover for M gas tractors for the smaller bolt pattern ignition drive housing and a different one for large bolt pattern M and SM ignition drive housing.

this is the meter i was referring to

From late M on up through 450 the service meters or whatever there called are the same for a gas and diesel. they just changed the meter drive gears so the meter turned the same dirrection for gas and diesel. Earlier M and MD were different.
