400 manifold

Can some one tell me about the differences in the intake/exhaust manifolds available from the factory for a Farmall 400 gas tractor. I am told the one on my tractor is a "Cold" manifold and a "hot" one would reap me about 5 more hp. Is this true? What are the pros and cons of changing? What is the part number of the "hot" manifold? Thanks in advance

The cold manifold is for the gasoline engine. The hot manifold is for the kerosene/distillate burning engines. The cold manifold is much better and will result in better over-all performance.

I don't know about the 5 HP, but your tractor likely has the gasoline mainfold, as there weren't many sold with the kerosene or distillate engine which takes the other manifold, although it was still sold, and if the guy who saw your tractor knew what he was looking at, he could be right. The link is for a parts search, put 400 in the box, your tractor will be in a long list, click on engine. If it does have the distillate/kero manifold, the valve is probably stuck, thus the manifold is not working properly. The engine head could be different also, with lower compression. Could have been changed in the last 54 years, also. I think you have to remove the valve cover to see the head number.

When you say cold, are you talking about the 3 rib manifold over the regular gas manifolds that were on the M and Super M's? If so, they are better. Think about it, if they were not any better, do you think IH would have made the change?

The adjustable heated manifold uses a outlet pipe that bolts to manifold, the gas and LP use a screw in outlet pipe. Unless the tractor is being restored to original and it was shipped to use kerosene or distillate I wouldn't recomend using that type. If your tractor is a gasoline it came with manifold # 362437R1 and later replacements for it from IH was 362437R2.
On left of page click parts and pieces, when that comes up put manifolds in search box. You will find pictures of 4 IH gasoline manifolds M,SM,400 and 450. See if yours matches one, then the answer to that may help answer which type may be better than yours or not. Also need to say what the tractor is going to be used for.

The gasoline manifold did not need the heat valve in it, therefore it was simplified for the gasoline engine. The original one was for distillate/kerosene, and the heat valve caused the engine to warm up faster. It was produced through the 450. Due to the slow warmup of the gas 6 cylinder 221/263 used in the later 460/560 these manifolds also have a heat valve. I doubt if there was a huge difference in performance between the 2 manifolds in the H/M--350/450, although the gas one probably flows better.
