I have a Farmall A with a really nice woods L306 on it. But unlike the woods L59 I can not put the front caster wheels to the inside mounts because the front tires hit them. I moved them to the out side of the deck but now I have a skelping problem any time I get on an angle where the top side caster wheel drops down some.
I know they used to have an anti-skelping roller but do they still make it? Did it really help out? Do any of you have a 6' woods with it and do you think it is worth the time to find one?
If not I may go back to a L59 deck.
any thoughts or suggestions.
Thanks
Chad

I have a friend who put the roller in the middle of the deck and he said it stops scalping and he wouldnt be with out one. I think you can still buy them from woods.

thanks! anyone elses info on it like it or dislike it let me know!
I called C&G and it is $111.50 plus tax and shipping for the complete kit. More then I hoped but cheaper then messing up the yard and my blasdes.

I have an L306 on a Farmall H. The caster wheels are mounted to the outside, and I do not have a scalping problem. Maybe you are just trying to cut the grass too short?

You can move the mower back at the rear that mite get the front wheels to clear. The 6ft makes a nice set-up on the A. You could also either narrow up the wide front or move it out some as it shouldnt take much.

Hi Chad,

I have a '40 A with a 5 ft. L59 that I bought a couple years ago without the center roller, then last year I bought a '53 Super A also with a 5 ft. L59 that has the center roller. Well I liked it so much without the scalping I bought a roller kit for the '40. I also had the casters set towards the center on the '40, which got moved out like I got the '53 already set at.
If you move the deck towards the rear, you will have to be carefull backing up with the deck lifted, because in the right circumstances the rear tire can catch the deck and it will ride up the tire. Been There Done That!!

Chad: My thoughts on this, being a 72" cut mower, you should be able to set front wheel tread wide enough that caster wheels will bolt on the inside mounts, and not strike front wheels.

If I had a L306 on an A, I'd also set rear wheel tread wider, then given the Woods mower shape you can set it back closer to rear wheels with those rear wheel set wider.

If you want to trade mowers, I'd love to have a 306, then I could set my wheel tread at 60" or 64". Get an A or SA set that wide it will climb a mountain without fear of upset. You'd also find, rear wheel set wide would lessen the scalping.

I'm running my 140 on 68" wheel tread this summer, doing some two row cultivating in cabbage. When I go to or want to leave the field, I can climb the 5' highway embankment just about anywhere I choose. I don't think one could upset one of these set that wide, it would slide first.

Chad,
I have a farmall c with an L59 and mow uneven ground. To cheap fix to prevent scalping. Lowered the wheels of the mower on level concrete and bolted a 2"x6" 1 1/2" above grade. When you get to a high spot the 2"x6"will lift the mover, prevent scalping and damaging the blades. Or it will push the dirt out of the way level the ground. I had ruts in my yard after a concrete truck delivered 10 yards of concrete. To level out the yard I put loose dirt in the ruts. Lowered the 2 x 6 to be at grade level and it was the best grader you could ask for. Using a 2" x 12" works better leveling dirt or filling in pot holes in your yard. Try it. George
