Valve (clearance and timing) and ignition timing are the first places I'd look.

Run all your valves, but double check the exhaust valves. Too little clearance and they'll pop open early and you'll have flames up the head, even if the cam is timed up properly to the crank.

How does it run at idle? At speed and under load? If the ignition is retarded too far, the gas will still be burning when the properly timed and set exhaust valves open, again making for burning fuel in the head.

Make sure the fan belt is not to loose.
Check the bottom hose to see if it is collapsing.
I don"t know about thermostats on them but if it has one try running without it. It may be bad.
Is the pump new?

Another thig is air bound. If it has a thermostat sometimes when you fill them with water after they have been empty air will be trapped under the thermostat and without water hitting the thermostat it won't open. After the engine heats up loosen the thermostat housing and let air and water bleed out.
Again I don't know if your engine has one but if it does it could be your problem. Seen this many times on cars after an anti freeze change. The air usually bleeds out by itself over several hours.

Check the impeller on the water pump to make sure it isn't worn or not turning. Hal
PS: Make sure that new thermostat is installed
correctly.

like scotty said, check the ignition timing. did you time the engine running with a timing lite or static with the engine off. if with a lite running and you set the timing on tdc, its gonna be way retarded and heat up quick. if the motor is laboring at idle, the timing is way retarded.

i checked before i put it on but i bought a new one now and i am going to try running with one till i get the air out

i timed it with engine off could that make a diffrence should i retouqe the head bolts i used copper coat in the gasket

the manual recommends re-torquing the head after the tractor is warmed up, also reset the valves too. if you timed it with the engine off you should be ok at tdc. something to check, your distributor advance to see if it is working. you can pull the cap and turn the rotor a little and see if it snaps back, or put a timing lite on it and watch the marks to see that it advances. my minnie moline advance was stuck and that tractor ran hot enough to boil the fuel in the gas tank. fixed the advance and she runs cool now.
