hello,,posted this ? on the dozer ,loader forum also and was directed over here,, i believe i have a D282 inline 6 diesel in my hough 50C,just purchased it couple month's ago for 3000.00,long story short ran it low on oil,, was over 6 qts low,,it startd making a chirp squeal sound ,,shut it down,, added oil,, after an hour tried starting,, would only bump bout a revolution,,chirp and squeal sound still there? How do i identify this motor,,seized piston?,,spun bearing? cam bearing?,,is this a sleeved motor,,parts availability? expense?friend told me to remove injectors and pour an ounce or so oil down cylinders to lube them then spin over to see if it would spin easier and see if noise go away?this was just going to be used on my 40 acres and just to move some snow,,as always dont want to spend a fortune on a total engine rebuild but need to get some ideas on the expense and some ideas of what i might have damaged in the motor,,will probably do work my self with friend who has some knowledge of diesels,,but dont want to be chasing a monster,,should i scrape it and part out if motor rebuild not feasible? thanks in advance,,shawn

If it has glow plugs its a 282. Sounds like you spun a bearing. Its going to need a complete rebuild and possibly a crankshaft. Parts are available. To rebuild it right its going to run several thousand for parts and machining. Post a picture of it.

I would say you have lack of lubrication damage to at least one connecting rod bearing, maybe more. If you are lucky, you may have shut it down before the bearings actually welded to the crankshaft and spun in the rod bores. At the very least you will probably have to pull the engine to remove the crankshaft and have it polished and install new bearings. More than likely you"ll have to have it re-ground. If the bearings spun in the rods, you will have to get new or reconditioned rods. If the mains spun, well, we"ll just hope that didn"t happen. Try not to get too excited until you pull the pan off and see what happened. You probably saved yourself much further damage by shutting it down when you did. I saw a JD irrigation pump engine once that ran out of oil, the Murphy shut down system failed, all the rod bearings seized, turning the crankshaft purple in the process. Didn"t hurt the mains at all, or the rods themselves. The owner couldn"t afford a new crankshaft and had us re-grind the rod journals and install new bearings only. That was in 1984. It has run every summer ever since.

From experience and a spring of chasing parts trying to save money. Look on the left side of the block bout mid ways take a wire brush and look at the flat machined portion. Scrub it off and find some stamped numbers not the raised numbers cast in the block. Call an IH dealership and give them the numbers. It could be a 236 , 282 , or a 301. If the front and rear mains were not leaking you might get lucky for an in frame. If not pull it, replace the sleeves and rebuid that baby right. These are tough old motors and will give many more years of service. Don't take short cuts cause you will pay in the long run.

Bad news is that ya spun a bearing. Good news is that they are VERY forgiving.

Neighbor has a 986 that he forgot to put the drainplug/oil back in.

Made two rounds in a quarter mile long field when he heard it knocking.

Local Red shop put a set of bearings in and it's running just great. :>)
