560 rear end

Any simple, sure-fire way to tell whether or not
the rear end has been retrofitted with the fix
for the weak rear end the early 560's came with?
The serial number is 22249 which makes it a late
59' according to this site.

With out looking inside of it, the serial number plate was supposed to be stamped with a triangle shape imprint after original conversion was completed, also ,if it has latest bearing package the right differential housing will have a tapered shim and you can see that it has because an alignment tab on shim will be visible just above where the shaft goes through housing that brake pedals pivot on. Not all improvements were made at the same time and they were actually in the final drive and not transmission except for roller bearing being added with bearing package on to the pinion. Original change over, Tapered roller bearings replaced the ball bearings on differential, then later, they improved those bearing to alleviate ends of rollers failing, and the bull pinion bearing was greatly increased in size, bull gears and bull pinions were changed to 25 degree angle teeth verses 20 degree original. To sum it up, lot of changes took place but not all at one time.

Gary, That little triangle or otherwise called a "Delta" stamp at the end of the Serial #! Those rearends had up dates on them.

I would think the fact that its still running after 40+ years means its either been fixed - or it didn't need it in the first place.

If nothing already posted lets you know for sure. I don't claim to be a 560 expert, so I will say that if you remove one of the brake housings and the retainer plate the inside brake shoe is beside and look at its backside. There will be a 6 digit number. If it begins with 37 it should have all the updates installed, at least the ones I messed with did. If it starts with a lower # the differential and bull gears were probably not replaced. Your tractor is a little past the serial # to come with all the updates. Even if its marked with the triangle, IH changed upgrade parts at least a couple of times trying to solve problems before the last batch of upgrade parts. So depending on when the work was done or if, you may have none, some or all upgrades. Some tractors got short cutted with parcial upgrades also.
