Super C Shift Problem

When i push clutch in and try to shift, all i get is gear grind. if i run throttle real low, it sometimes does seem to slow flywheel down where eventually i can shift. usually i'll just turn tractor off, put it in the gear i need, and then start it up.
If i start it up with it in reverse, then when i push clutch in, i can shift to any gear with no gear grind.
I have tried adjusting linkage to the point where tension is just about to begin on the clutch, but that didn't make one bit of difference.
Does anyone have an idea what is wrong?
Thanks - Bruce

First, adjust the free play of the clutch pedal to 1 7/16" from the transmission cover. If this does not work you will probably have to split the tractor and replace the clutch.

Bruce: It could be Hy-tran in the transmission. I know IH recomended Hy-tran after it was introduced, however gear oil 90W, or heavier slows those gears down much faster.

If that doesn't cure it your in for a split. It may not be the clutch either, could be the pilot bushing.

Hugh, you are correct about the pilot bushing, if apart, I would probably replace everything. Regarding Hytran, it takes the TA/transmission on my 460HU about 10 seconds to stop turning, so that I can shift without gear clash at low idle. I can remove the cover over the TA and see it come to a stop, I suspect the pilot bearing is "dragging", although everything has been rebuilt. How common is this on TA/hytran equipped tractors, since you have had several? I'm not going to split the thing again -- BTDT, and don't see anything wrong, but this is the only TA equipped tractor I have.

Thanks - i'll adjust the pedal - then i'll try the oil that Hugh recommended.
If no luck - i guess i'll split the damned thing.

Pretty common for the TA equipped tractors to take a while for gears to stop turning as you have a couple things going on that is normal. One is, the mass of the ta itself spinning, then you have live pto shaft running in oil through transmission lower shaft with a tendency to keep counter shaft rotating. Also, if you use the metalic, (dyna life clutch disc) it is even worse.

Try moving the gear shift lever all the way to the right and push it forward. That is an open spot in the shift pattern and won't go into any gear but seems to act as a transmission brake. I do it all the time on my SC and it never clashes but I've never had a clash problem anyway with normal shifting. Hold full forward 2 or 3 seconds and see if that will work for you. Good luck, Hal.

Bruce: The heavier oil will slow those gears faster. My 140 had Hy-tran when I bought it, changed to gear oil, made a huge difference.

IH changed very little in those 4 speeds, then when Hy-tran came along in the late 50s, all of a sudden it was great for all IH tractors.

Mine was rebuilt by Hy Capacity, and has the small pads rather than the one that covers the whole surface -- will that make it drag more, seems to me it should be less?
