I pulled the old wheel off the A and went to install a new reproduction one, but it does not fit the shaft (which is still in good shape) snugly. The center hole in the new wheel is actually large enough to let the wheel wobble once it is installed. Is this typical of these cheap Made in China wheels? Is there a higher quality wheel available out there that will fit right?

I'd send it back at their expense. There is no reason to be sloppy... just to make sure, get a mic or caliper and measure the diameter of the shaft, there is an outside chance that sometime between now and 1940, the shaft had been modified to correct some wear.

I've never encountered a steering wheel hub that was too large. Usually the center hole is a bit too small but is easily remedied with the use of a round file or sometimes just some sandpaper to get the paint out of it.

I am 99% positive that the shaft is okay. I noticed they sell a wheel with a 7/8" to 3/4" taper and they may have sent me the wrong one (again). I will have to take some measurements tonight after work.

I bought one repro wheel and it was horrible. After that i sent the original to minn-kota repair where they recovered the original wheel. They also have original cores on stock if yours is too bent or something to re-coat. Its a bit pricey and you may have to wait until they have a batch to do all at once but i was very happy with the results. Check them out at http://minnkotarepair.com/

I would like to second Cue P's suggestion about Minn-Kota for refurbishment of your original. They did one for me a couple of years ago and it trully came back looking original. Those China made things don't even look or feel right compared to an original. Back then the cost for the one on my H was around $65 or $70 including return postage. They usually have an ad in the Red Power magazine. Hal

That has been my experience also.

Depending on just how loose it fits, you may be able to remedy the situation by doing a "knurl" job on the shaft. To do this, take a good center punch and a hammer, and start center punching some dimples into the shaft where the steering wheel fits. Putting a dimple into steel raises the metal around the dimple, and if you create enough dimples, you can effectively increase the diameter of the shaft. If you increase the diameter too much, you can take it back down with some emory cloth. It's kind of a trial and error, by guess and by golly thing, but it can be done.

Call minn-kota anyways...they may have a used "core" and put new rubber on it for you. They did for a john deer B for a friend of mine. I dont think you'll be disappointed.
