I have water in the Engine oil of a Farmall M tractor. It is either a cracked block or a leak at some gasket. Has anybody else had this problem? Is it common?
If it is a cracked block than there is nothing I can do but I am hoping that somebody else has had this problem and it is something that is fixable.

Drop the pan and put a piece of white cardboard, like a baler twine box, under it. When you get back to it you may see where to look for the leak. If its down by the piston it can be a head gasket or a cracked head but these generally leak slow enough that it may not show up on the cardboard. If you are getting lots of water it could be the soft plug behind the timing gears at least it can on a H I'd have to go look at my bone pile to see I don't remember. but you will see this leaking down the front inside. They also crack on top of the hesd.

The other person covered most of the main points where they can crack or leak. He missed one. They can crack at the bottom of the cylinder up about 1/2 to 3/4 inch fromt he bottom. I had a an Engine that was a low hour engine do this. To try to save a buck we pulled the sleeve and then coated the bottom 2 inches of the cylinder with high grade high temp silicon. Then we put the sleev back and I used my finger to keep a thin bead around the bottom of the sleeve. The guy has never called me back yeat and that waqs 3 years ago.

There are 2 what I know as 'FREEZE PLUGS" in the back of the block and 1 in the front of the block. The one in the front had rusted out on mine. You could see the seap next to the front main. Hope this helps. Harley

Hello Alan,
You could have a cracked block, a cracked cyl. head or a bad head gasket. I would suggest that you pull the valve cover, the oil pan and the manifolds.Drain the cooling system completely. Then pressurize the cooling system to 10 psi.(no more)! Take a good look at the top of the cyl. head, inside the ports and at the bottom of the cyl.'s Using some soapy water in a spray bottle saturate these areas. If there is a leak you will see bubbles forming. It would be best if you can leave the pressure on for at least a couple of hours. If the antifreeze is leaking around the pistons, then pull the cyl head and go to your local welding supply store and buy some Red Dye Penetrant for detecting cracks. They will know what you need. Please take a look at my web site and call me if you have any questions. I hope this helps you.
