I have a "42 M Farmall, which I rebuilt quite a while ago. I cant for the life of me remember if the differential carrier rides on tapered roller or ball bearings. I noticed thru the fill hole that I could (just barely) rock the ring gear a little if I pried on it with a bar. If it has ball bearings, I would imagine this very slight amount of play to be normal. Does my M have ball bearings for the carrier? Is a little play acceptable? It seems that I remember all roller bearings I have ever seen had a little play to them. The gear oil is clean, with nothing in it, and the gears all look fine. What do you guys think?

Ball bearings, some side to side play is normal in a used M. Some backlash between gears is normal also.
