I have a nice clean 21inch 6hp B&S electric start walk behind mower. It runs smooth and no smoke. Starts easy.
With the pull cord it starts with only one easy half pull.
But it will not start with the key.
The battery is full charged and tests good.
It turns over fast enough with the starter that it should start.
It does this hot or cold.
It seems like it just is not getting any spark with the starter.
Why does it start so quick and easy with the cord but not with the key.
Thanks,
Dell

I don't think you need battery voltage for your
ignition since it probably has an armature. Pull the plug wire and see if there's fire to your plug using the starter. Your switch may be somehow grounding out the fire to the plug. Hal

Hal,
Even tho this is OT I’m going to follow up and let you know what happened and maybe help someone else.
You are right that the juice for the spark is independent and could not care less how it is being turned over.
I took the plug wire off and stuck a phillips screw driver in and cranked it with the starter and got a nice blue arc. So I knew the key/starter circuit was not gnding things out.
Then I primed it with the bulb primer the recommended 3 times and tried the starter...nuthin.
So I pull it with the rope and it started right away.
So I did the same thing again and the same thing happened except that it took me three pulls of the rope to start it. So........I considered that maybe with the warm weather and the slightly slower turning speed of the starter that maybe I was flooding the thing out.
So.....instead of 3 pushes on the bulb primer I just did ONE PUSH ON THE PRIMER. Hit the key and wham it started in an instant!!
So after this long winded explanation, the bottom line is that manually pulling the start cord was cleaning out any excess gas that the starter was not. So now I hit one push on the primer and it starts every time with the key.
Thanks for the help,
Dell
