I have fully adjusted it on the engaging lever but it still wont shut off. If i put a ratchet strap on it and pull it down all the way it will stop after a little bit but then runs again when I take it off. It is the newer PTO setup on a 1960 560 Farmall.. Thanks

The clutch type pto could be tough to shut off with normal adjustments. Discs warp so they drag and also the half moon key in operating shaft wears so you lose some of the movement. If it operates ok engaged I would just work a little more on the external linkage. You need at least a half inch of tension where pawl locks in off position. Lever should just float freely when engaged. I say this as I have seen many operators try to lock the lever in the engaged position, not saying that you are. Should have a nice overcenter snap .

Thanks Pete, I have way over a half inch of pressure when it's locked and also when it is engaged you have to hold it back to keep it running full speed. I've adjusted all I can with the rod.

I may be wrong but are you sure you didnt adjust it too far. I say this because you said you need a rachet strap to hold it down to stay off and that you need to hold it up to keep it running at full speed. Just a thought. Otherwise you may have to rebuild the PTO or have it rebuilt.

Not sure which PTO assy. you have. Over the 560 production there were 3 different PTO assys. The early 560's had the same style as the 450. That was push the button to unlock from the off position, pull handle back until it locks in on position; push the button to unlock from on position, move handle forward until it locks in off position. The second PTO assy. you push button to unlock pull handle back until it snapped overcenter but this one had to be removed from the tractor and adjusted on a bench. The last model was unlock button and snap overcenter but it could be adjusted on the tractor. I believe you used a tool shaped like a brace adjusting tool. This was the best PTO IMHO. My 560 has the PTO that was in the middle and was a real pain to adjust. Luckly I never had it go out of adjustment in the middle of a shelling job! Armand

Porky: I think your in for a PTO rebuild, doesn't matter which unit you have, none of them had enough strength to withstand 560 horsepower. I bought a 560 new in 1963 and I had the PTO bebuilt 5 times in 17 years and 11,000 hours. I also had a 656 and rebuilt it once in 15,000 hours. That my friend is the difference in quality.
