560G Hydraulics

Well, I thought I knew what I was talking about. Turns out, sounds like I was wrong, so far. Guess that's what I get for thinking.

Started getting some whining and squawkin from my p/s and hydraulic pump. Steering wheel would be hard to turn, and then it would cause the ol' girl to shudder, and fade out. She'd die, and I could fire 'er right back up, and everything was great again.

Go out to fire her up, starts to turn, and she's inchin back in reverse. Funny, I thought I left her in Neutral. Push the clutch in, shift to 2, and she's still going backward.

Pull off the side plate, pulled the piggyback unit, open the hydraulic pump, and there's gouges like nobody's business, but the hydraulics were still working ok. Looks like there's a missing key in the shaft of the gear that runs the p/s pump.

Shrapnel from that key clogging up a valve somewhere?

Thanks to Steel Wheel Ranch for helping
me to not buy a new 17GPM and burn it up. Always nice to talk to someone who's interested in educating the customer and not just selling them a product.

I guess my second question would be, how much performance would I lose on my loader if I went down to the 12 GPM? I don't do that much with my loader, but I don't want to lose the ability to lift all the crap I do now.

Help!

Cliffnotes Version:

Farmall 560 w/ New Idea Loader, 17GPM Cessna pump, p/s works, hydraulics work, Forward gears do not, HY-Tran was milky, operator platform near trans. was hot to the touch, will buy more from Steel Wheel Ranch, HELP!

I may be tractor ignorant, but I'm not tractor handicapped.

Thanks,

Matt

If Mike will sell you a good used pump, buy it, he is as reliable as they come. I don't have a loader, I do have a 460, I would think the 12 GPM would be ok, but I'm not a loader person. The gear problem is separate. Remove the shift lever and try lining up the rails, the nub on the end of the shift lever may be worn. Get rid of the old fluid.

I think I found my solution. The lousy hydraulic pump needs to be replaced, but its not related to the tranny. Found this GEM hunting through the archives. Thanks to Captaink!

"Your 560 is very likely suffering from the common Red Iron ailment of a worn shift lever.
To make sure, take out the three cap screws at the bottom of the shifter tower and lift the shifter out. What you will see are three shift rails, (approx 3/8 wide) and two dividers (approx 1/16 inch wide) with about a 5/8 slot in them. To have the transmission in neutral, all the slots must line up. With the shifter or a large screwdriver or other pry bar move the rails until the notches line up with the dividers. You may need to depress the clutch, pull the TA lever, and rock the tractor back and forth to accomplish this.

After aligning them, you can put the shifter back in (make sure that the bottom of the shifter lever goes into a notch. BUT before you do this, take a good look at the bottom of the shifter and determine how much it is worn. I usually build mine up plenty, then grind them back down until they just barely fit and work, that way it will be a long time until this problem occurs again."

Any thoughts? Ideas?

Thanks,

Matt
