Isn't this a bit heavy...

for a 450? Will my 400 pull such a mammoth plow? I think it's a 419 with 4-16's. Is there an IH pull-type built this heavy? - Mike

I have a similar 4 bottom plow but have only used it behind my fast-hitch 650.

As you can see below, the 400 will lift it. As for plowing deep and fast, there are too many variables to consider.

BTW, this is what we call a two-way plow around here.

The #60 and #70 had the same square beam. The #60 had the rockshaft under the frame, and the #70 had it over the frame. I still prefer the #16. Not as much trash clearance, but it's a heavier plow, with larger diameter running gear. There were later pull-types, but if you want to match the 400 by year, one of these 3 would be the one.

The 400 and the 450 were advertised as 4 plow tractors. Then again when the dealership brought the 560 with a 5 bottom to demo it they didn't stay long.

Here in this part of Kansas plowing wheat stubble, it would probably pull it okay. Worked on a ranch on the WY/ SD border one summer and pulled a 5x14" pull plow with a 450 gas in wheat stubble. Pulled a 3x16" FH plow on corn ground where we plowed deeper.

That's a semi-mount plow so really the tractor is only lifting half of it. Notice the hydraulic cylinder on the rear caster wheel.

I'd believe a good 450 could pull 4x16s in loamy ground. The F400 can pull 3x14s decently in our ground, and the general rule of thumb around here is to drop a bottom from the tractor's plow rating if you want to maintain forward motion.

the plow is a 412, ih's first attempt at a semimount plow. i have 2 of them, just not as nice as the one at the roundup.
its just as likely to be 4-14s, as 4-16s. the plow on the back of wardner's 400 is the 411, same plow without the tail wheel.
in our soils, a 400 or 450 would pull them ok.

Thanks for the info & input. I'm planning on buying a plow for my hotrod 400, just not sure which one. I may not even go with an IH plow. I'm quite happy with my 2x14 Ollie Plowmaster I use with my H. If I run across a 4x14 or 16 Ollie plow, I might snap it up. I don't have a FH at the moment. That puts me out of the running for a 412 & I haven't seen a 60 or 70 around for a while. I guess we'll see what time brings. - Mike

Crazy,

That front plow is just a joke photo. The primary inspiration was to show off the homemade front fast-hitch.

Yep, same tractor. I haven't got the bugs worked out on the creeper. It appears that the IH SH, 300-350 pump is not getting oil. I may change pumps. I have moved on to another project in the meantime. Here's a preview.

15hp per bottom is a good rule to follow when figuring how much tractor you need. But like someone else said, you have to consider all the variables.

What is THAT?
Color me ignorant and curious yellow.
It sure is pretty tho. I haven't a clue cept it has a pulley on a PTO shaft. I can't wait to see the finished project.

PS. I really like the 2 way plow. Does the driver seat swivel so ya can see where ya been?

I like where he (or she) has the fire extinguisher mounted. I am trying to find the best place to mount an SMV on my 300. Right now I have it mounted on the bolt that ensures downpressure for the FH.
