on my fathers 340 the ta just stopped working one day when he was using it. It is stuck in the low side. he said it didn't make any noise- no grinding/banging/broken mechanical indication. Knowing very little about the innards of a ta, is there a way to tell without tearing everything apart whether or not its an adjustment issue?

Thanks!

The T/A has a small clutch in the center housing. Dirrect or high T/A depends on it holding. If the shaft that goes in the center housing that the T/A handle linkage goes to turns clockwise (looking from left side of tractor) enough to move the T/A clutch release bearing away from the pressure plate fingers, adjustment is not the problem. If it happened all at once with no noise, the splines may be worn off that clutch plate drives from. T/A pressure plates usualy make some noise when they start comming apart. If its not adjustment problem you can remove plate on top of T/A housing and see T/A clutch.

Unless the TA clutch lever is stuck in the released position the failure is in the TA clutch. If it still has the original disk with woven linings the most likely problem is the lining coming off the disk. The rivets can come loose and the lining fall off or more likely letting the tractor coast down hill in the low TA position. That over speeds the disk can cause the lining to come off even if the rivets are tight. Replacement disks are bonded metalic lining that handles the speed much better.

The clutch can be inspected by removing the cover on top of the clutch housing, the stamped steel one held on by four bolts. The TA clutch can be replaced by splitting the tractor at the engine clutch.

That sounds like a bad TA clutch.

It was caused BECAUSE the TA was not adjusted properly. Dad's "new" W400 had the same problem. Someone had tightened the linkages to the point where the TA clutch wasn't engaging properly in direct, and it was burned up.

If you're lucky that's all thats wrong. You can replace the TA clutch with a single split at the bell housing.

An old local IH mechanic, like our own personal tractor vet, told Dad that if you can spin the planetary gears in one direction by hand, but not the other, that the TA itself is okay. He lucked out.
