My smdta constantly builds up the white cruddy stuff (don't know the technical term) on the positve terminal and where the ground cable attaches to the deck plate. What causes this? It is also just about always dead after it sits for several days. New battery and volt regulator, newly rebuilt gen, all new wiring harness and cables. Is it just a bad ground? I've cleaned the ground and removed all paint, grease, dirt from the connections several times. Doesn't seem to help much. Any thing else that causes this?

orrosion is caused by electron flow. Cleaning in a damp environment will temporarily fix it, but it needs a clear spray, or terminal spray on it to keep the moisture out. If it goes dead, thee is a drain on the system. It can be tested with a vlot meter set to 2 volts or lower. Disconnect one battery terminal, then check the voltage between the terminal, and the post. If more than .02volts, there is a draw. Disconnect things one at a time to find it. (reconnect as you go) JimN
I agree with Jims as always good advice, I will tell how I handle that. First I clean n polish n wire brush n cleannnnnn all bright n shiny where a cable meets ground or at a battery post etc and use stainless steel washers n nuts n bolts etc where possible, then immediately after reconnecting everything I seal (keeps oxygen off) the surface with like that red anti corrosive battery spray protector or clear silicone or clear coat etc etc to keep moisture and oxygen from coming into contact with the connections, that way they cant oxidize (rust) nor is there oxygen for that unsightly white powdery "stuff"

I use either baking soda & water or a boughten battery post cleaner to clean the battery posts & cables than spray them with the red protcetive spray available at any auto parts store. It won't prevent the corrosion from coming back but it sure slows it down. I usually clean them at least once a year.
