Magneto mess

Well let me say that I thought that I had a pretty good grasp of how things worked until what I am looking at and the instruction as to getting to the breaker bar to set the points. I am working on the H and took off the dist. cap hoping that I would be able to pop off the rotor loosen three screws pop the cover and be looking at the guts of the system what I found was that the screws are on the side and to loosen them they need to come completely off and to do that I would need to unbolt and remove from magneto. Not to bad so far only problem is by doing this step I enter one more variable getting the spline gears to line up ( in the operators manual it shows that the dist. points to the back of the tractor on mine it points to the sky

Makes me wonder if you don't have a magneto.

If your distributor cap is on top, instead of behind, the rest of the distributor, you likely have a battery ignition with the Delco-Remy after-market distributor.

I don't know any of the particulars of that setup, like where the screwas are and even how that differs from an IH horizontal distributor, but if the distributor cap comes off the top rather than the rear end, it is definitely not a magneto.

Are you trying to tell us you have an AFTERMARKET Delco distributor NOT a mag???

I think you've just encountered a dust cover over the points that simply lifts out for access to the breaker POINTS. (PLEASE keep the "breaker bar" out of there!)

I should mention that there is a battery system 6 volt involved. So this still leaves me in the dark about if I loosen the two bolts holding the dist. an pull it out of the magneto will I be able to get it back in without messing up the ti miming providing the cover comes of so that I can get to the points

Little help getting me in the right direction Going off of the photo above post t theunit that I have on the H looks to be the same version vertical dist. delco - reamy

If you are simply trying to gap the points or replace them, take off the cap. Lift off the rotor. Then, lift off the dust cover, exposing the points.

NO need to take out the breaker plate unless further repairs are needed such as bushing replacement or centrifugal advance repairs.

It looks liek you and Bob might have been posting at the same time, so I'd ask you to look at his photo in the post above.

Mind, the coil could be mounted anywhere (not necessarily where the one in his photo is), but if the distributor drive otherwise appears the same, you do NOT have a magneto.

To your basic question, I don't know the setup of the Delco right-angle distributor, but you shouldn't have to "pull it out" to get to the points. Delco designed the stock battery ignition distibutor for IH and others and they're all pretty much the same. If the points and condenser aren't readily visible when the cap and rotor ar removed, It should only be a matter of three screws at most, if there are any screws at all, to pop a second, flatter cover off to access the points. If what you have resembles Bob's photo at all, the points will be under a cover that is in the same plane as the bottom of the cap.

I'm fervently hoping someody with some experience on the upright Delcos will jump in with some concrete guidance for you, but the last thing you should do is pull the upright part of the distributor body up and off the base.

There's NO bolts/screws involved in getting the dust cover off and out of the way.

(quoted from post at 22:28:34 08/05/09) There's NO bolts/screws involved in getting the dust cover off and out of the way.

After market is delco remmy AS in the photo I pulled the cover, the one with the spark plug wires. Was set to clean the crud and build up if any from on the wires and thier contacts and tak a Q - tip and rubbing alcoho and clean this area. the next step that need to do to get at the bresker arm so that the timing can be set only problem is that the cover won't pop off.l

I think you're down to the point of just needin' to get your jaw set just right and maybe tryin' a few magical or colorful incantations.

It's not unusual for them to be stuck a little. There is a little tension anyway when they fit right (their purpose is to keep moisture and dust that might get into the cap from getting down into the guts of it, so a snuggish fit is good) and they will stick. Without getting too muscular about it, try getting a pick, or the tip or blade of a penknife and work around it until you find a spot under the edge to get it started and it should come right up.

Well finally got the dist. cap of and am looking at the guts of the unit thats a plus considering. So now can I align the pulley so that the indicator and the two timing marks center the pin then take and rotate rotor so that it points at #1 spark plug then replace back into distributor (ended up removing virtical assembly so more than likely things are not in the same place that they were rwhen it was pulledd) and making sure the gears or seated then tighten back down turn crank slowly and see where in relation to the timing mark the breaker arm goes click
