656 Hydraulics Quit

I was using our 656 loader tractor the other day and I noticed a slight whiring sound. The noise changed with engine speed. Today I went out to use the loader. Lifted 3 bucket loads of very heavy dirt. On the 4th load, when I tried to lift it all of a sudden the tractor made a loud grumpling noise and wouldnt lift. It didnt sound the same as the pressure relieve popping. The noise is constant, and loud, and the loader wont lift and the steering wont work. THe 3 point does function, but I dont have any weight on it. Any ideas? I am going to change the filter first and see if that changes anything. The fluid level is low, but we always run it that way since the axle seals leak like crazy...

It is probably the splined drive hub in the pressure plate back plate. when those splines wear out you will have no hydraulics or PTO.

Try changing the hydraulic fiter. Its behind a plate of 6 bolts opposite side of the pump. If it is still screaming after that. Then you need to pull the pump out and check the (O) rings on that short tube. The grooves on that tube can wear after many years. If so replace that suction tube.

since the 3 point works, you can rule out your pump not turning since the hitch pump drives off the main pump. i'd imagine your pump went bad but you should have the hydraulics tested first.

similar just happened to us and our 656. Lost pto and hydraulics while under heavy pto load. all of a sudden we had gears grinding too. barely had hydraulic or pto with no load. turning the steering wheel would cause the gears to grind teeth. Splitting the tractor we found
the pto driven shaft rear bearing snap ring came out of place, the driven shaft floated to the rear, causing the front needle bearing to be damaged by the driven gear. We had visibly damaged driven gear and pump gear teeth too.

If this happened to you, best case is a rear split, worst case is a double split. you may have to replace the pto gears and pump gear as well. Once you are in that far, the TA should be inspected and considered for replacement. replace your axle seals before putting her back in service as well.

SPLIT BETWEEN ENGINE AND CLURCH HOUSING, CAN REPLACE BOTH PRESSURE PLATE AND PTO SHAFT,
THERE IS ENOUGH PULL ON PTO SHAFT FROM THE PUMPS TO KEEP IT FROM TURNING. THIS WAS QUITE COMMON ON INDURIAL TRACTORS.
