PAINT the muffler?!

I got my new muffler from OEM, today. A label on it is telling me to paint it with 1500dg paint. Paint?! What is paint doing for (and on) my muffler? I don't get it. Please, enlighten me. This sounds a bit silly. Paint it, it says. Ach! - Mike

I think your first mistake was buying stuff from OEM, but you didn't ask about that.
My guess is they tell you to do this bc the factory finish is poor and will see heat and go to heck in a hurry. This will just keep you muffler from getting that bright red rust in the middle. It will probably help it last a little longer.
A lot of people paint black mufflers, but IIRC Farmall mufflers should be silver. We paint the 4430 muffler every year. You can get the paint at NAPA or Farm and Barn. It is kind of pricey, I bought it to paint my brake calipers a long time ago.

ALmost all paint will burn off. You may have luck an get a brand that handles 1700degrees, but the truth is the exhaust is very hot. Light work won't burn it off, but real farming will. The OEM mufflers werealuminized (electroplated) and they oxidized off in large patches at the middle of the big diameter. The only two solutions are Black oxide finish, or stainless steel. Even the stainless will discolor some. JimN

When i first pulled at the Armada Fair i had painted the new muffler with VHT high heat silver paint !!!!!

I cleaned the surface with prep solvent and everything, it looked great.

When the tractor went under load [ on the transfer sled ] the paint started coming off in large sheets. When the tractor couldn't go any farther and i unhitched i was covered in large flakes of silver paint.

We all laughed at the fact i was covered in sheets of silver paint.

The only paint we have found that last and won't come off is Bar-b-que paint [flat black].

I know that is spelled incorrect but you get the point.

It works great on exhaust manifolds as well, it won't burn off.

Born and raised on a farm one mile south of Armada on North Road . Showed registered Holestiens 4H cattle at the fair. they still have a great pull every year!! W4

in some back issues of Street Rodder. It seems I have 2 options: 1. Use BBQ black as a base coat for whatever color (ex: ford blue) you need to apply. 2. Sandblast whatever surface you are applying hi-temp paint to. They both emphasize cleanliness & prep. Also, don't use anything less than 1500dg if comming straight off the header. My uncle sez there's a black (I hope) paint made by Deere for hi-temp applications. Supposed to be pretty good. Hmmmmmm, I guess it's trial & error. Thanks much, guys! - Mike

Years ago I used to drive a company TurboCharged Cessna 414 which is a pressurized twin-engine piston airplane.
The turbo charger sets directly on top of each engine and runs around 2000 degrees F. When flying at 20k ft at midnight you could see the turbochargers glowing bright red just inches away from fuel lines and on some models there was an aux fuel tank setting directly aft of the enginess. To my knowledge there has never been an incident with fuel lines coming off but I had several turbo air intake hoses fail.
It made my day when the company sold it and got a turbine powered aircraft.

you can go to napa and buy VHT flame proof header paint. It comes in a silver color. It is a little high price like 8.00 a can but it does not burn off. I painted a new manifold with it and it has not burnt the paint off and I have run it on the bush hog for about 8 hrs. Bob

Iv seen the M glow at the manifold below the muffler but not the whole muffler. I have aslo watched metal glow a little at 1250 in heat treating oven but getting a myffler at 1700 is wild.

I just bought 4 cans of yellow from a place called Rural King. You can use any distributor that carries Rustolium $5 can. They say it is good for 1500deg but you better hope you don't see that! Also the surface needs to be very clean.

Dear Gene
My intent was to put a higher temp requirement on the paint/polish/coating. My muffs never et to 1700. But they have been red in the midsection many times. Our old SP125 12' ombine (with Herculese 6cylinder) had a valve go out. It was bright orange from #5 cylinder to one foot up the pipe. It was a flat head, and even the block was red around the manifold. Not good. It was the big mahine in 52. JimN

Painted my new Muffler with VHT Silver, I did the break in as they tell on the can, been a month and it's ran hard, still looks like I just sprayed it on!

Whats wrong with OEM? Bought several things from them and found the quality to be very good. Had some billing problems but that was solved with a phone call.

I love the black JD paint. Good stuff!

As for OEM, there are other companies out there with the same or better products for a better price. They used to be good, but I think they are getting a little big for their britches.
