Farmall A axle seals

anyone know of any auto parts stores that carry the transmission and final drive seals? I found some on NAPA"s site, but they were around $25-$30 each and looked like they were listed as NOS... NOS seals don"t seem ideal especially at those prices. Taking the final drives, pto, etc. off the A so that I can stop all those leaks before I paint it. Anyone have suggestions for the easiest/best way to clean all the goop off thats in and on the transmission. Been letting it all drain out for a couple days.

I'd be wicked surprised if there's a big enough supply of NOS anything for your tractor for NAPA to be listing it. Can't say it's not so, but it'd be unusual.

The prices yo're getting sound high. I just looked at some receipts for the same seals I bought for my BN back in '02 and, even from CaseIH, they ranged from $13.25 to $15.50. I shouldn't expect that they had doubled in price since then.

If you can get the seals out without prangin' 'em up too bad, a good counterman, or one with a shop out back, can measure them up and look up the replacements. Better would be to take the IH part numbers and have them cross them.

First thing I do on a dirty tractor that needs a lot of work is clean up the outside. Pressure wash, degrease, hot pressure washer if needed. Just makes for a cleaner, better job.

As far as the inside of the tranny, how did it drain? Did you find a lot of dry caked sludge at the drain hole? In any event, it never hurts to clean it out. You can pull the cover and shifter and have a look around. It's tight and awkward in there, but you can to some scraping and swabbing of sludge with kerosene or diesel. If you don't have it apart yet, mix some gear oil about 1/3 with 2/3 diesel or kerosene, and take the tractor for a half-hour drive to sling and swirl things up all you can and redrain before refilling with good oil. If you're already apart, it might be a better idea to do this after you're done with the seal work anyway as you may get more crud in there in from cleaning up around the bearing cages on the diff shafts and you might just as well flush that out along with the rest and get it all at once.

As far as any cake and grime from oil seeping outside the tranny or final drive, a scraper will get most of it. The rest can be cleaned up with a stiff parts brush and some kerosene.

those prices i"m referencing are for seals that were crossed from ih part numbers... and each had the designation of NOS which in my mind always means new old stock. the prices i quoted are also accurate... crossed the ih part numbers on napas website. can"t imagine ih prices being cheaper either.

Same old thing it pays to shop around. Thats more than 2 times what i have been paying. You also need to replace the input bearing and seal on the tranny. Are you talking about the axel or diff shaft cause thats where most all of the As and Bs leak

Not sure where you're looking, jamie.

I just pulled up the diff shaft seal for an A on NAPA's site by entering the IH part number and using the interchange function. The result is in the link. I don't see any reference to NOS and it's full price is $21.49 which is not terribly out of line with the $15.50 I paid to CaseIH seven years ago. Most NAPA counters will cut you some discount from that if they know you or you're buying enough. Like Gene and I have both said, $30 is way out of line. I haven't paid that much for a single seal ever, even from CaseIH and certainly not from NAPA.

Okay, I see the NOS now over to the right.

That's the NAPA number that crosses. Look under the specs for the seal, which says it is a N(APA) O(il) (S(eal), which is what NOS stands for in this case.

And I cn only repeat that $21.49 is high but not out of line with CaseIH. See if your local dealer will discount from that. If not, shop around.

Just bought all the seals for my B. Use their IH Case link for your parts diagrams, they have all the seals at a good price. hzzp://www.external_link/index.cfm (Change the zz to tt for the link.)
