Couple of Farmall M Questions

When installing intake/exhaust manifold gaskets, do these go on dry or with high-temp sealant? Most of the posts I've come across recommend dry, but wanted to double-check.

Can anyone provide the measurements for an M Lift-all dipstick? Such as how far down to the full/fill lines? Mine came without a dipstick, and want to be able to know it's at the right level. (Just has the little filler cap above the housing, no remote valve, etc.)

Thanks for the help.

To be perfect, drain all the fluid out, and put in 6 qts. Mark the stick. I think the stick is 8" long and is marked at about 7 inches for full. The system does not care much unless low enough to starve the pump. The rod should be 1/8" steel with the top going through a fabricated washer with a 1/8" hole in it that fits inside the cap, and onto the top of the stand pipe. The washer is held on, on the factory stick, with a deformed spot above and below the stick. JimN

Kerwin, I will get you the measurement from my 1939 M. However, I had the same problem, and someone on here suggested it was in the tank. Sure enough,I took a small pen light magnet and the first time out it come. I used some JB weld to put it back to the washer and have not had any problems. Harley

The bayonet gauge is 11 1/2" long from where it connects to the washer. The checked full mark is 9 1/2" from the washer or 2" from the bottom of gauge. My operator's manuel suggest about 6 quarts of a good grade engine oil, or the same oil that you use in the engine of the tractor. It encourages you not to overfill the oil reservoir. Hope this helps. Harley
