Casting numbers will give you a good idea but won't give you positive proof of the production year. I have a SM that according to the serial # is a '53. Every casting # & engine serial # are '52. Tractor was built in Feb 1953 according to the serial # plate.

Lot of castings were carried over to the next production year. Also a casting could have been replaced at some point in the tractor's life. In my case I know the history of the tractor & all castings are original.

Actually, there were not "production years". Your castings were poured in 1952 and they were assembled into a tractor in February of 1953. "Just in time" supply had not been invented yet and each arm of the manufacturing system was scheduled to keep ahead of the final assembly effort. First in first out was not as important as getting tractors assembled so you could find an earlier serial number with later castings, or castings on one tractor may be mismatched by year around the first of the year if they ran out of 1952 axle housings (for example) but still had clutch housings for the early 1953 tractors.
