Got the M out of the shed after a few years and I cant find my owners manual and I need to know the oil capacity. Thanks

Actually a stupid question if you come to think of it

as many as it takes to get to the proper level on the dipstick, run for 5 min, shut down, whait for 5 min and check dipstick level, add oil if needed.

There's no such thing as a stupid questions, just stupid answers.

Majority of the letter series tractors didn't have an engine oil dipstick. I believe it was available as an option & I know M&W offered an aftermarket dipstick, maybe some other companys did as well. I have only seen a very few Ms that had an engine dipstick.. I have an M&W that I bought for my SMTA but haven't drilled out a bosse yet for it to mount in and won't until I have the oilpan off.

Ross, my manual is out in the shop & don't remember the exact # of qts off hand. I'm thinking 11 qts with filter change but am not positive. If someone hasn't posted the amount in the morning I will go out & check & post back.

Sorry,I never seen an engine that did'nt have a way to check the oil level.

I never had an M either.

A good rule of thumb would probably be to not answer questions about a tractor you obviously have very little knowledge about or have never worked on. Help is always welcome here if it is useful and aimed at actually helping someone.

The oil capacity should be 8 quarts. You do not need to add any additional for the filter. It uses a bypass type filter and other than the small amount that is absorbed by the filter, all the oil drains back to the pan when the engine is not running.

I'm pretty sure the book says 8 but when I changed mine, it took 9 to get to the top.
I don't know why. I call a friend who has been working on farmalls for years and he said he didn't know why either but it takes what ever it takes to get to the full mark.

When it runs out the top petcock its full. And when it quits running out the bottom it needs a quart of oil, at least.
