The do's and dont's of the Farmall TA

Thought I would get some advise on how to use the TA. This is my first TA tractor and would like not to do something stupid and tear the TA up. FEEL FREE TO ADD TO THE LIST.
If it matters my tractor is a late 67 gas with the 291.

For example tractor pulling or pulling a heavy load.
1) Do you leave the starting line in low then shift to high? Or start in high? Does it matter.
2) Its ok to pull the TA back if you start to have power loss issues from a load. Yes?

Lets say we are pulling a large grader blade.
1) If you are pulling a load and the need to pull back on the TA happens so you pull back on it. Later you dont have the large load and the tractors TA could be shifted back in to high. Can this be done?

1) Rolling down hill do not pull the TA back because it will free wheel.
2) If you are backing up to hook a imlplement is it ok to shift the TA in to low range while ideling.
3) Is it ok to shift the TA back in to high range with no load while ideling.
4) Do RPMs matter when shifting a TA
5) Do you have to have a load on the tractor when shifting a TA.

[b:f206c2f8fc]THAT'S WHAT IT IS MADE FOR[/b:f206c2f8fc]

[b:f206c2f8fc]VERY TRUE[/b:f206c2f8fc]
2) If you are backing up to hook a imlplement is it ok to shift the TA in to low range while ideling.
[b:f206c2f8fc]NOT SURE, BUT THINK IT'S OKAY[/b:f206c2f8fc]
3) Is it ok to shift the TA back in to high range with no load while ideling.

DO YOU MEAN IDLING IN NEUTRAL OR JUST IDLING ALONG SLOW?
4) Do RPMs matter when shifting a TA
[b:f206c2f8fc]NO[/b:f206c2f8fc]
5) Do you have to have a load on the tractor when shifting a TA.
[b:f206c2f8fc]NO[/b:f206c2f8fc]

ONE MORE THING... DO NOT EASE BACK ON THE LEVER... WHEN YOU PULL THE TA LEVER, PULL IT QUICKLY

3) Is it ok to shift the TA back in to high range with no load while ideling.

DO YOU MEAN IDLING IN NEUTRAL OR JUST IDLING ALONG SLOW?

Is it ok to shift the TA back in to high range with no load while ideling and moving.
.
Lets add, is it ok to shift the TA forward or back in neutral?

I've been driving a 300U for more than 10years and use the TA routinely.
In my opinion you can use it whenever and whereever you please. The only don't I know of is do not use low (lever back) going down hill. Downhill pulling a plow is ok.

Yes, it doesn't matter if you are pulling something or not, load or no load.
TA is intended to get you through the places that the gear you are in is making it lug down. Doesn't matter if it's a tillage tool, loaded hayrack, wagon, whatever. When it starts to lug, pull the lever back (I never liked for the tractor to lug down more than 2-3 hundred RPM for any length of time)... when the load eases up, squeeze the handle and push it forward... only time you would not is going down hill with the load pushing the tractor. Also works great when baling... if the windrow is heavier than the baler can handle, slowing the tractor with the TA works great and is smoother than clutching and downshifting. I baled several hundred acres of alfalfa with a 450 and a 50T baler one summer and the TA saved a lot of time or broken shear bolts.

Some humor...My family called it the "torque" - I can still hear the old ones yelling "Pull the torque back!" or "Throw the torque out - let's go!" One spring we had a tractor down and borrowed a neighbors 4020. Grandpa said it was a POS because the "torque didn't work!" He never had farmed with anything but Red (and horses)starting with a 1936 F-20 in 1937. He didn't know that handle on the 4020 was the PTO, looked like a 300/400 torque handle to him. He was a great old fellow.

I was told by an IH mechanic that what happen to a lot of TA with loaders, is that the driver would pull into pile of something with the loader and when the tractor bogged down, the drive will try to get a big more into the load by pulling back on the TA...and there would go the TA. Don't know if that is accurate or not. I did purchase a 340 with a loader on it some years ago, and I had to replace the TA.

He was wrong on that score. Unless the operator pulled back part way to slip the TA clutch, then it was way incorrect operating procedure. JimN
