Hydraulic Flud

What is the best brand to use in my Farmall 460? Does anyone have an opinion on TSC Brand?
What brands do you guys like / and recommned? Thanks in advance.

Hy-Tran is the IH brand, opinions vary and the options are yours. I use it, but have also used Farm & Fleet hydraulic fluid. From experience first time I did this, not large enough fluid catcher on the first plug out, I had a mess by the time I got back to the first hole.

ANy fluid that meets or exceeds the Hytran specs. is Good to go. Hytran, and John Deere Hydraulic transmission fluid are for sure good. JimN

I use the Orscheln 303 brand in the yellow bucket. I believe it is 20 wt and meets all specs. They run it on sale every 2 or 3 months. This week it is $22 a 5 gal bucket. TSC has always want too much for their brand and there is nothing that says it is better than any of the others that meet the same specs. Just compare them. Some may be a different weight though. As long as it says it meets all IH specs and others.

Main thing is too keep moisture out of it. Long periods of heavy field work heats it up and dispells the moisture (the milky look and slimy feel). Kinda hard to do for a part time loader tractor which means extra oil changes. With your lines, cylinders, and draft control housing holding a few gallons, it's near impossible to change it once and clean it up. Between condensation and rain leaking around the shifters, water is always getting in. More oil changes means more money depending upon how rich you are.

To answer your question, I haven't heard anything bad about TSC hytran. Used to use it in my 460 years ago. I think it is over priced. Like motor oil, many brands are made at the same canning plant. You can compare the size and style of buckets, tops, and spouts to see if they were made off the same type of assembly line.

I bought a 5 gallon bucket of Hy-Tran from my local Case/IH dealer about 15 years ago. When I got it home, I noticed another label sticking out from under the Hy-Tran label. Curious, I peeled it off. Underneath was a Shell Donax label. This was not something the dealer dreamed up, there was also a shipping label from the IH Region warehouse to the dealer elsewhere on the can. After that, I stopped paying extra for Hy-Tran. NAPA UTF works just fine for me.

Farm and Fleet is cheaper and just as good. If it meets the specs, use it! I think most of the warrentys are out on these machines.
