f-14 starting problem

My Brother has a 1938 F-14. It starts by cranking it about 10% of the time the other 90% we have to pull it, however we only have to pull it about 2 ft. and it starts right up. It has a complete rebuilt motor, carb, mag and fuel pump. We have also checked the timing and it is fine. It runs great once we get it started however we have no idea why it doesn't want to start by cranking it. I was wondering if there is anyone who can help us out we are desparate.
Thank you

Had the same problem with my Farmall A several years back - points were worn beyond recognition. New set of points properly set and it will hand crank every time.

Start with points - I believe 0.013" is the correct setting. If it still won't hand crank, suspect bad impulse coupling on the magneto.

Just my experience and thoughts.

I've found mine starts better with hotter plugs - I use W20's in mine. How long does your tractor sit between starts. I've found if I start mine within every couple of weeks it starts fine but if it sits longer it is a bear to start. It seems to be how they are from what others have written.

Next time you go to start it, slightly open the carb drain to see if you have fuel in the bowl. I had a bit of trouble with mine, as I had the manifold set wrong (had it set for kerosene), and the carb was hot, and boiled some of the gas off after I shut down. When I would go to start it again, it took a number of cranks to get the carb filled up again.

I got around that by setting the manifold correctly. The other thing to note is that it would start right up after 2 cranks if I gave it a shot of ether directly into the carb before attempting anything. that would make the engine run for 5-10 seconds which was plenty to get fuel up to the carb.

this MAY not be your problem, but it is worth a try. Took me almost a month of monkeying around with it to figure it out.

The post about the points is also a good thought.

good luck and let us know what you find.....
